The role of this specialty

Sarcomas are diverse rare tumours with different tissue origins. They cannot simply be treated like more common organ cancers.

Information assessed

Plan imaging and biopsy access before removal. Specialist pathology and selected molecular tests help distinguish subtype.

Working with other disciplines

Surgery, radiation, medicines, and rehabilitation depend on type, grade, site, and stage. Limb function and margins matter.

Distinctions that matter

Not every soft-tissue mass is a sarcoma. Unplanned excision may complicate subsequent care if it is malignant.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
