Understand this condition

Oesophageal cancer affects the food pipe between throat and stomach. Squamous-cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma have different characteristics.

How it is assessed

Endoscopy with biopsy identifies histology. Imaging and other tests assess extent, nodes, spread, swallowing, and nutrition.

Care pathways

Selected cases may involve endoscopic treatment, surgery, chemoradiation, or systemic therapy. Nutritional support accompanies treatment.

Important distinctions & limits

A stent may help food passage in selected circumstances; it does not replace whole-disease assessment or guarantee tumour eradication.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
