Understand this condition

Leukaemia comprises blood-forming malignancies. Acute versus chronic and lymphoid versus myeloid origins distinguish very different diseases.

How it is assessed

Blood, marrow, immunophenotype, and chromosomal or molecular testing classify disease. Urgency depends on type and patient condition.

Care pathways

Chemotherapy, targeted or selected immune/cell therapies, transplantation, and monitoring for selected types have different roles. Infection and transfusion support matter.

Important distinctions & limits

Leukaemia does not always use solid-tumour staging. Fever with marked illness or bleeding needs prompt local assessment.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
