A vascular malformation — not a tumour or cancer.

Understand this condition

A cerebral AVM is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins. It is a vascular malformation, not a tumour or cancer.

How it is assessed

Specialist-selected MRI, CT, and angiography assess anatomy and bleeding history. Size, location, flow, symptoms, and individual risk are considered together.

Care pathways

Selected cases may involve monitoring, surgery, embolisation, or radiosurgery. Natural bleeding risk must be weighed against intervention risk.

Important distinctions & limits

Sudden weakness, a new seizure, or a very severe headache requires local emergency assessment, not a wait for travel coordination.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
