Surgery & approaches

Partial and radical nephrectomy

  1. Partial / radical
  2. Preserve renal reserve
  3. Urine & organ function
A concept diagram, not an anatomical image, procedure simulation, or personal treatment sequence.
What the procedure involves

Partial nephrectomy removes the lesion-bearing kidney portion; radical nephrectomy removes the kidney with relevant tissue. Balance function and disease control.

Assessment before surgery

Mass location and complexity, both kidneys’ function, vessels, and patient risk guide choices. Access approach differs from removal extent.

Recovery & follow-up

Urine, bleeding, renal function, and pathology guide follow-up. Urine leakage is one concern after partial procedures.

Key choices & risks

Partial surgery does not suit every case; radical surgery is not the only option for every mass. Discuss potential renal-function decline.

Robotic or laparoscopic: understand the distinction

Read the video transcript
  1. Procedure: what is done? Whipple, colectomy, and mastectomy describe procedures on different organs.
  2. Approach: how is it accessed? Open, laparoscopic, or robotic describes how a surgeon reaches the operating area.
  3. A surgeon controls the robot. A robot is not an autonomous surgeon. Approach depends on the case and surgical team.
  4. Ask about recovery. Small incisions do not mean no risk. Ask about complications, organ function, and follow-up.
