Understand this condition

The duodenum is the first small-bowel segment, near the bile duct and pancreas. Its tumours differ from ampullary, pancreatic, and other histological cancers.

How it is assessed

Endoscopy with biopsy and imaging assess type and location. Relationships to the bile and pancreatic openings influence surgical options.

Care pathways

Surgery may involve selected resection or a larger operation depending on location. Histology and stage inform systemic treatment; nutrition needs monitoring.

Important distinctions & limits

Not every duodenal tumour requires a Whipple operation. Location alone does not determine surgical extent.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
