Understand this condition

Skin cancers include basal-cell carcinoma, squamous-cell carcinoma, and melanoma, with different behaviour and treatment.

How it is assessed

Skin examination and appropriate biopsy assess type and depth. Proximity to the eye, nose, ear, or other structures affects choices.

Care pathways

Surgery and other local methods may suit selected cases. Radiation or systemic treatment has selected roles in advanced or special circumstances.

Important distinctions & limits

A non-healing lesion is not automatically cancer but needs assessment. Removing its surface without diagnosis can obscure tissue evaluation.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
