Understand this condition

Medullary thyroid cancer arises from calcitonin-producing C cells, unlike most differentiated thyroid cancers.

How it is assessed

Assessment may include calcitonin, CEA, imaging, and RET testing. Genetic counselling addresses inherited forms and family implications.

Care pathways

Appropriate cases may involve surgery and nodal management. Selected advanced disease may involve targeted therapy according to disease features and availability.

Important distinctions & limits

Its C-cell origin creates a different pathway from iodine-absorbing types. Do not assume all thyroid cancers are alike or radioiodine always applies.

One diagnosis, several care specialties

Read the video transcript
  1. Understand the disease type first. An organ name is not enough. Pathology, stage, and general condition give context.
  2. Each specialty has a role. Medical, radiation, and surgical oncology may work together according to the case.
  3. An MDT brings perspectives together. A multidisciplinary team discusses findings and options. Team composition depends on the case.
  4. Bring clear questions. BKC supports coordination. Diagnosis and medical decisions remain with licensed clinicians.
