Surgery & approaches

Thyroidectomy

  1. Part / whole thyroid
  2. Nearby nerves & glands
  3. Voice, calcium & hormones
A concept diagram, not an anatomical image, procedure simulation, or personal treatment sequence.
What the procedure involves

Thyroidectomy removes part or all of the thyroid. Extent and neck-node management depend on diagnosis and planning.

Assessment before surgery

Assessment covers lesion type, thyroid function, imaging, sampling, voice, and airway. Nodules and cancers do not all require the same operation.

Recovery & follow-up

Monitoring includes voice, breathing, relevant calcium tests, wounds, and pathology. Hormone medicines and additional treatment are individualised.

Key choices & risks

Voice changes, neck bleeding, and calcium disturbance may occur. Sudden swelling or breathing change after surgery needs immediate assessment.

Robotic or laparoscopic: understand the distinction

Read the video transcript
  1. Procedure: what is done? Whipple, colectomy, and mastectomy describe procedures on different organs.
  2. Approach: how is it accessed? Open, laparoscopic, or robotic describes how a surgeon reaches the operating area.
  3. A surgeon controls the robot. A robot is not an autonomous surgeon. Approach depends on the case and surgical team.
  4. Ask about recovery. Small incisions do not mean no risk. Ask about complications, organ function, and follow-up.
